Kelly fixed Eugene with a no-nonsense stare. “I came here for answers because I’d heard that Kimberly and Allison were rivals and there was ‘bad blood’ between them, so to speak.”
“You’ve been talking to those little gossips at the university, haven’t you?” Eugene said with a sniff. “They were simply jealous of Kimberly because she wasn’t like them.
Lesser talents are always threatened by those with more, you know that.”
“That may be true, but one of Allison’s neighbors also saw Kimberly visit Allison the night she was killed. So, you can understand how suspicious that looks.”
Eugene pursed his lips but made no reply, obviously considering what she’d said.
“Now that I’ve met Kimberly and spoken with her, I agree with you, Eugene,” Kelly continued. “Kimberly didn’t go over to harm Allison. She went there to apologize and wish Allison well.”
“That sounds like Kimberly. Dramatic and hotheaded, but reason always returns.”
“Unfortunately, she didn’t see anyone else lurking about, either, so my Chinatown investigation has been in vain, I guess.” She gave him a sly wink, noticing the sound of the front door opening behind her.
“Not at all, my dear,” Eugene said, genial good humor returning. “Remember, I met Allison several times over the years. I’ll be glad to dredge up any memories for the cause.
You may pump me for information if you’d like.”
“Don’t be too hasty,” Jennifer spoke up clearly from across the gallery. Good acoustics, indeed. “She’s brutal, you know. Truly brutal. A pit bull when she wants to be.”
Kelly observed Jennifer strolling towards them, a familiar mischievous smile in place. Oh, brother. Now, there’d be two of them giving her a hard time. Great. Stereo teasing.
